How to Check a Gold Bar’s Authenticity in Bahrain
Start with the seller, then check the bar’s markings, packaging and serial number. For an MSS Gold bar, use our official verification portal to check its registry record. These checks help you spot a problem, but a matching photo, printed number or QR code alone cannot prove the metal inside is genuine.
Check who you are buying from
Before paying, confirm the business name, physical address and contact details. Ask for an invoice identifying the seller and the bar’s weight, purity, quantity and price. Keep it with your purchase records. A familiar logo in an advert does not establish who is actually selling the bar.

Read the weight and purity markings
Our 10g product photographs show “Au 10g”, “999.9” and “FINE GOLD”. Au is the chemical symbol for gold; 10g is the stated gold weight; 999.9 fineness means 99.99% gold, sold as 24K. Compare the markings with the size and purity on your invoice.
The plastic and card add weight, so a sealed 10g bar and its packaging will weigh more than 10g together. Do not treat that combined weight as the gold weight or open the packaging just to put the bar on a kitchen scale. If the specification is in doubt, arrange an appropriate check with a qualified professional.
Look at the packaging and match the serials
Inspect both sides in good light. Look for damaged seals, splits, signs of opening or altered labels. Raise any concern with the seller before accepting the item; appearance alone does not settle whether the gold is genuine.
On the MSS 10g example, the serial is engraved on the bar and printed vertically on the white back of the packaging. Compare the two numbers carefully. They should match. Then compare any serial recorded on the supplied certificate or invoice. Layouts can differ by product, so compare with the correct weight’s product images.
Keep the original packaging and purchase documents. If something does not match, pause and ask for an explanation instead of relying on a printed certificate alone.
Use the official MSS Gold verification portal
- Scan your packaging’s QR code, or open verify.mssbars.com directly. Check the address before entering anything.
- Enter the six digits after “S” on your bar.
- Compare the returned serial, weight and fineness with your item.
- If no record appears, recheck the digits and contact MSS if the issue remains.
A registry match confirms a number’s record. It is one part of checking your purchase, not a laboratory test of the physical bar. Always compare the record with the markings on your own bar and its packaging.
What your MSS digital certificate looks like
You can create an optional personalised certificate through the MSS verification portal after checking your serial:
- Select “Generate Certificate”.
- Follow the instructions to photograph the white back of your packaging, with both serial numbers clearly visible. The portal checks the photographed number against the serial you entered.
- After the photo check, enter the holder’s name and mobile number to create the certificate.
- Save or share the finished certificate as a PDF or image, and keep it with your invoice.
The certificate brings together the serial number, weight, fineness, holder details, bar photograph and generation date. The example below uses the actual MSS certificate design with sample holder details.
When does a bar need professional testing?
If you have an unexplained mismatch, uncertain ownership history or doubts about the item itself, stop the transaction and discuss testing with a qualified bullion dealer or assayer. Ask which method is suitable for that bar and packaging, what it checks, and whether it could affect the item’s condition.
X-ray fluorescence (XRF) measures surface composition. It does not, by itself, establish that the whole interior has the same composition. Depending on the bar, a professional may need complementary testing.
Avoid scratching, filing or applying chemicals as a home experiment. Those actions can damage the bar or packaging without giving you a reliable answer.

Does a “999.9” stamp prove a bar is real?
It states the claimed fineness. Read it alongside the seller’s records, matching product details and any verification or testing needed for that item.
Does a failed QR scan mean the bar is fake?
No. A camera, damaged print or connection problem can prevent a scan. Open the official portal directly and check the serial. If you still cannot resolve it, contact MSS before drawing a conclusion.
Should I open the packaging to check the bar?
